When Is the Best Time
The best months to visit Cahuita are February/March until April and September, October because it rains less than in the wet season in the rest of the country. The dry season is also the best time for snorkeling. The leatherback-, green-, hawksbill- and loggerhead turtles lay their eggs at the park's beaches. Nesting season for leatherback is from March to July, the green from July to October, the hawksbill and loggerhead from February to May. Therefore, it's always worth to travel to the east side of Costa Rica.

If you travel around Costa Rica in January and February showers may occur more often in the afternoon or evening on the Caribbean Site. Cahuita founded in 1970 to protect the well known coral reefs close to the shore. The park has two entrances, Cahuita and Puerto Vargas in the south. A 7 km nature trail leads through the forest from one entrance to the other along the peninsula. Don't forget your snorkel gear. Inside the reef, it is safe to snorkel, but outside strong currents occur. Another highlight close to the reef is a 6-meter deep shipwreck. A permit is required, and a guided tour is necessary to find the wreck. Camping inside the park is not permitted. Birdlife is plentiful and wildlife as well like sloths, howler monkeys, coatis, raccoons but also coloured-venomous snakes.
