When Is the Best Time

The best time to climb the hills on the Isle of Skye is usually from mid-April till the end of May but you can experience a day with decent weather throughout the whole year. My experience is to start after noon since the evenings are usually more calm on Skye.

For detailed weather and crowds information check out my article from Stac Pollaidh one of the Assynt Hills.

Sgùrr na Banachdaich is one of the Cuillin Munros, the mountains above 3000 feet. It is considered one of the easiest mountains in the Cuillin ridge to climb yet not to be underestimated. Check the forecast before you go, the weather can change very quickly and navigation on the ridge is very hard when the conditions are difficult. Careful route finding is essential since the eastern side of the mountain is very steep. Also be ready for rough ground and scree on the way up. The mountain stands in the middle of the ridge and therefore is an excellent viewpoint. You can see Inaccessible Pinnacle, Sgurr Mhic Choinnich, Sgurr Alasdair, Sgurr a Ghreadaidh. and also Loch Coruisk, Blaven etc. Sgurr na Banachdich is 965 meter high and is the most westerly Munro.

The easiest way up starts at the Glenbrittle Youth Hostel. Walk the path along the stream. After 2km turn right and walk the moorland to Coir' nan Eich. Then, climb the unstable scree to the higher plateau. There are several paths leading to the summit. Be careful on the very top, it can be windy and the eastern side is a huge drop. Descent the same way.
